Job Description
POSITION GOAL
To perform skilled work in maintenance, repair, and construction of lighting, power and control electrical systems in a responsible and accurate manner.
ESSENTIAL PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES
The Electrician Journeyperson shall carry out the performance responsibilities listed below: - Review work orders and job sites to determine materials and procedural requirements.
- Requisition and/or special order parts and supplies needed to effect repairs.
- Trace existing circuitry to determine loads, actual and planned. Inspect, test, evaluate, install and repair electrical fixtures, wiring circuits, generators, motors, controls, and other apparatus. Maintain low voltage control systems.
- Measure, cut, bend, thread, assemble and install electrical conduit, using such tools as hacksaws, pipe threaders and conduit benders.
- Pull wires through conduit, splice wires, and connect wires to lighting fixtures and power equipment using appropriate hand tools.
- Install control and distribution apparatus such as switches, relays and circuit-breaker panels.
- Test continuity of circuit to ensure electrical compatibility and safety of components, using testing equipment such as ohm meters, volt meters, oscilloscopes, etc.
- Remove covering panels, wall boards, ceiling tile, dirt, concrete or other obstacles to reach repair sites and restore work areas after completion of projects.
- Inform supervisor of needed supplies.
- Be responsible for the work of apprentices and laborers as assigned.
- Operate School Board owned vehicle in a safe manner and assume responsibility for all supplies and equipment on the vehicle.
- Complete all projects in a competent workmanlike manner (National Electric Code 110-12) and ensure proper recording of time and materials.
- Perform all duties which require extensive physical effort such as climbing, lifting of over 25 up to 60 pounds, pulling, etc.
- Perform and promote all activities in compliance with equal employment and nondiscrimination policies of The School Board of Broward County, Florida.
- Participate successfully in training programs to enhance the individual’s skills and proficiency related to the job responsibilities.
- Review current developments, literature and technical sources of information related to job responsibilities.
- Ensure adherence to good safety procedures.
- Follow federal and state laws, as well as School Board policies.
- Perform other duties as assigned by the Director, or designee
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS & EXPERIENCE
- Standard high school diploma or satisfactory completion of an approved General Educational Development (GED) Testing Program.
- Six (6) years of recent employed professionally paid electrical work experience. Possession of current valid Broward County or State of Florida certification as an electrician, or if not certified at the time of application, must pass Florida State Certification Exam prior to being placed on permanent status.
- Computer skills as required for the position
- Possess the ability to effect construction and repairs from drawings or sketches; estimate materials, supplies, and labor costs.
- Must have the ability to use all power and hand tools associated with the trade and perform all tasks with little or no supervision or assistance.
- Must have thorough knowledge of electricity and associated circuits and be able to determine the proper material for each job.
- Knowledge of standard electrical code requirements.
- Must possess a current certificate of competence.
- Ability to work effectively from ladders and scaffolding with due regard to safety for self and others.
- Must be able to follow written and oral instructions.
- Able to work well with others.
- Must provide own hand tools.
- Must have ability to assume responsibility and effect repairs/complete tasks without assistance.
- Must have a valid Florida driver's license and, if essential to perform certain duties of the position, a proper Florida Class A or B Commercial driver’s license with endorsement is required.
- Willing to answer emergency calls at all hours, including off hours. This position will include pre-employment drug and alcohol testing.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS & EXPERIENCE
- Standard high school diploma or satisfactory completion of an approved General Educational Development (GED) Testing Program.
- Satisfactory completion of the Broward County School District's Electrician Apprenticeship Program
- Bilingual skills preferred.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
Light work: Exerting up to 20 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 10 pounds of force as frequently as needed to move objects.
TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT
Salary and benefits shall be paid consistent with the District's approved compensation plan. Length of the work year and hours of employment shall be those established by the School Board.
